Legendary Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh heaped praise on the young explosive opener Abhishek Sharma for his incredible batting show for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing IPL 2024.

The commentator further attributed SRH’s dream season to the formidable opening partnership of Australia's Travis Head and uncapped Indian all-rounder Abhishek.

Harbhajan further said that Abhishek is making a strong case for India's selection while hailing his exceptional batting performances throughout the ongoing IPL 2024. He said that no other young player has matched the SRH opener’s level of dominance this season.

Apart from his batting prowess, Singh pointed out that Abhishek is also a capable all-rounder, although the left-arm spinner has not yet gotten the chance to roll the arm in the tournament, thanks to the Impact Player rule. He has so far amassed 467 runs in 13 innings for SRH at a strike rate of 209.41 in the ongoing IPL 2024.

In the final league-stage match, Abhishek smashed his third half-century of the season to help SRH secure a four-wicket win over the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Hyderabad. Chasing a challenging target of 215 runs, SRH faced an early setback as Travis Head departed for a first-ball duck.

However, Abhishek continued his aggressive approach, scoring a blistering 66 off just 28 balls, which included 5 fours and 6 sixes, to set the tone for SRH's successful chase against the PBKS. But the young batting sensation missed out on a possible century in Guwahati.

With this win, SRH finished second on the IPL 2024 points table with 17 points and is set to face the top-ranked Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Qualifier 1 in Ahmedabad on May 21.

The winner of Qualifier 1 will advance directly to the IPL 2024 Final, while the losing team will compete against the winner of the eliminator in Qualifier 2. The eliminator will be played between RR and RCB.

Abhishek Sharma is breaking the Indian team's door: Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan Singh was quoted as saying Star Sports: “Ye Indian team ke darwaze khatkhata nahi rahe, tod rahe hain, todne ke liye bas ab taiyar khade hue hain (he is not just knocking at the Indian team's door but almost breaking it open). The kind of batting he has done in this entire (IPL) season, I don't think any other youngster has played this well...He has dominated with the bat. He hasn't bowled yet, which he is quite good at as well. He is a good allrounder.”

The commentator further said that he is really happy with Abhishek’s progress in the last 1 to 2 years, but mentioned that the Punjab lad was disappointed with the way he lost his wicket to Shashank Sharma because he had a hundred there on a platter and he missed it.

Harbhajan further said that the SRH opener has so far played impactful knocks in this season, recalling that the youngster made his Ranji debut for Punjab under his captaincy. He signed off by saying, “I am so happy to see his progress, the way he has enhanced his performance. He is around that door to the Indian team now, one day he will enter it.”
