Harmanpreet Kaur expresses excitement about leading India in the ICC World Cup

The Indian Women's team skipper, Harmanpreet Kaur, is prepared to lead India in the upcoming ICC Women's ODI World Cup. The tournament is expected to begin on the 30th of October against Sri Lanka in Guwahati.

“I mean, it's unbelievable because, you know, when I started playing I never even thought I would get the opportunity to lead my country, it was only in a dream,” Harmanpreet said at the captains’ press meet organized by the ICC, as quoted by PTI.

She went on to admit that the return of the tournament to India for more than a decade made it even more memorable for her, as well as all players in Women's sport.

“The ODI World Cup is happening after 12 years (at home), and I think it is going to be very amazing for all of us. It's all about enjoying this moment and not taking too much pressure,” she added.

Harmanpreet's clear strategy to avoid controversy in Pakistan clash

The Women's World Cup tournament will include the much-anticipated clash against Pakistan, which has been scheduled on the 5th of October in Colombo. Citing the deal between the India and Pakistan boards, Pakistan are scheduled to play all their games on the Lankan soil.

However, amid the controversies between India and Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025, the women's skipper has also been asked about her stand for the upcoming ICC event. Kaur, however, swatted off any such claims.

“We don't even discuss those things in the dressing room. We are only here to play cricket and our focus is only on cricket,” she explained.

World Cup Team Captains issue major statements ahead of ICC event

“I think India in their home conditions are going to be really, really tough to beat,” Allysa Healy, the Australian skipper, said.

“I think that has given confidence certainly to the younger players to have that self-belief, and I guess the awareness that they can achieve it at this level,” Sophie Devine, the New Zealand skipper, said.

“I've sort of learnt to compartmentalise different parts of the game. I think when you go out there as a batter, you're really trying to focus on the ball that's coming down,” Nat Sciver-Brunt said amid balancing leadership and batting responsibilities for England.

“They are very good players. I know they are playing at home, so we will be going there as a bit of underdogs,” Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu said ahead of the opening match against India.
