Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud created history with a magnificent bowling spell against India in the first innings of the Chennai Test. Mahmud finished with figures of 5-83 in 22.2 overs as India were dismissed for 376 in the first innings.

While Hasan Mahmud picked up five wickets, his new-ball partner Taskin Ahmed also picked up three wickets. Taskin was instrumental in reducing India to below 400 on the second day and finished with 3-55.

Hasan Mahmud creates history with a five-wicket haul

With his brilliant bowling spell, Hasan became the first Bangladesh bowler to pick up a five-wicket haul in India. Before him, fast bowler Abu Jayed held the record for the best figures by a Bangladesh bowler in Indian conditions. Jayed had claimed 4-108 at Indore in 2019.

Hasan doesn't have the pace of Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana but the youngster showed how lethal can be with his impeccable line and length under challenging conditions.

Hasan Mahmud picks up first 4 Indian wickets

Hasan was easily the pick of Bangladesh's bowlers who were brilliant in the first two sessions of Day 1. He picked up the big wickets of Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli in his opening spell to reduce India to 34-3 in the first 10 overs.

Picking up the big wickets of the current Indian team gave Mahmud the confidence and he kept on persisting on a good line and length. Not only did he pick up wickets, but he also went past the outside and inside edge on several occasions.

Rishabh Pant counter-attacked and took India to close to the 100-run mark. But Mahmud came back to dismiss him as he was caught behind by the wicketkeeper Litton Das. Pant was out for a well-made 39 off 52 balls.

It was Hasan's fourth wicket of the day and he had claimed all the wickets taken by Bangladesh till that point. While he bowled exceptionally well, he did not get good support from the team's spinners.

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja turn the game around

As a result, India piled on runs through their strong lower order as Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja turned the game around with their brilliant partnership. Both did not allow any other wicket to fall on Day 1 as India went to stumps in a strong position.

However, Bangladesh's bowlers came back hard on Day 2 as Taskin Ahmed bowled his heart out. Taskin picked up the first three wickets on Day 2 to have India 9 wickets down.

Searching for a five-wicket haul, Hasan gave his all and finally dismissed Jasprit Bumrah to pick up a historic five-wicket haul on Indian soil. The youngster will now be expected to do better in every innings in the series.

The 24-year-old also picked up a five-wicket haul against Pakistan in the previous series. He picked up 8 wickets in 2 Tests and was the third-highest wicket-taker in the series.
