"He Used To Scold Me While I Used To Bat": Virender Sehwag Pays Tribute To Late Umpire Rudi Koertzen

Former South African umpire Rudi Koertzen, one of cricket’s most esteemed officials, passed away on August 9. According to reports, Koertzen and three other people died in an automobile accident.

When the incident occurred, the late umpire was travelling from Cape Town to his house. On Twitter, the esteemed Indian starting opener Virender Sehwag expressed his condolences for the late South African umpire’s terrible passing.

On Tuesday, the former Indian opener posted a touching tribute to Koertzen on the microblogging website. The former Team India batsman reflected on his friendship with the late umpire and had fond memories of them.

Virender Sehwag Pays Tribute To Rudi Koertzen

The two-time World Cup champion also disclosed that Koertzen reprimanded him while he batted for the team.

“Vale Rudi Koertzen! Om Shanti. Condolences to his family. Had a great relation with him. Whenever I used to play a rash shot, he used to scold me saying, “Play sensibly, I want to watch your batting”. One he wanted to buy a particular brand of cricket pads for his son (cont), And enquired about it from me. I gifted him and he was so grateful. A gentleman and a very wonderful person. Will miss you, Rudi. Om Shanti, Sehwag tweeted.

Several stories claim that the former South African umpire was killed in a head-on collision close to Riversdale.

In 1981, Koertzen made his international umpiring debut. In 1992, the late umpire officiated his first international game.

When Team India visited South Africa Koertzen made his debut as an umpire in a Test match at the age of 43, In 2010, Koertzen ended his career as an international umpire.

Even Yuvraj Singh tweeted on the umpire’s demise, Tragic news of the sudden passing away of Rudi Koertzen. He was a gifted individual and one of the finest umpires the game has witnessed, known for his sharp decision making abilities. My deepest condolences to his family and well wishers  #RudiKoertzen
