Swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman and the newly-appointed Rajasthan Royals captain, Sanju Samson, is looking forward to working alongside former Sri Lankan captain and RR’s Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League.
Samson, who revealed the Sanga cover-drive as his first memory of legendary wicketkeeper-batsman, has said that it is a dream come true for him to be working alongside a legend of the game like Kumar Sangakkara and he intended to learn every side of the former cricketer.
”My first memory of Sanga is definitely his cover drive and I loved his batting. This is a dream come true and it was very exciting to know that I will be working so closely with a legend like Kumar Sangakkara,” said Sanju Samson as quoted by Rajasthan Royals official website.
“If you look up to people like Rahul Dravid, Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene, or Ricky Ponting, they are legends of their time. Everyone was so evenly balanced and everything they did, it looked perfect. I am waiting to learn every side of Sangakkara in this IPL season,” he added.
‘I am happy to take on this role’- Sanju Samson on being appointed as Rajasthan Royals skipper
Sanju Samson was appointed as captain of the Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2021 IPL auction after the inaugural champions parted ways with Steve Smith, who led them to a wooden spoon last season.
The Kerala swashbuckler admitted that he had never thought of being appointed as Royals captain until last year and that he is very excited to take up the role and the challenges that come with it,
”Yes, I am very much looking forward to leading the Royals. Definitely, a lot of different thoughts are going through my mind, but I would like to keep it simple. I am happy to take on this role,” said Sanju Samson.
“To be very honest, until last year, I never felt that I may possibly be the leader of the Royals,” he added.
Sanju Samson will make his captaincy debut when Rajasthan Royals lock horns with the KL Rahul-led Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 12.
