I Choose Who To Listen To And What To Block Out Entirely - Marnus Labuschagne On Dealing With Criticism

Australia’s latest Test batting sensation, Marnus Labuschagne, is quite a character on the field with his antics – whether it be during his batting or while fielding at short leg.
After being given a chance following Steve Smith‘s concussion in the 2019 Ashes, Labuschagne made the most of the opportunity and in his short career so far, has scored 6 hundreds and 13 fifties already.
Apart from racking up the runs, Labuschagne takes it upon himself to entertain the viewers. Vociferously appealing alone without any support or screaming ‘No run!’ after shouldering arms to a delivery, Labuschagne does it all. He says he has been called annoying as a result but the 27-year-old doesn’t let it affect him.

“People say I’m annoying but I think that’s because I’m interested in people. I love putting smiles on people’s faces. It’s gotten easier with time – I’ve learnt to read the news differently and choose who to listen to and what to block out entirely,” Labuschagne wrote in the newsletter, ‘Beyond the Bat’.
“Growing up, I never hid my love for the game” – Marnus Labuschagne
Labuschagne had a supportive environment around him growing up and his love for cricket just grew further and further from thereon. On the field, the spotlight constantly shines on him and the right-hander loves the attention.

“Growing up, I never hid my love for the game, but I certainly felt that it wasn’t received as well as it is now. I’ve always had a very supportive family and a group of friends that have encouraged me to be who I am and stay true to myself. But the best advice I can give is to be yourself and expect that not everyone will like it, but that’s just life,” he further mentioned.
