Cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra wants Indian opening batsman Rohit Sharma to be included as the fifth competitor in the ‘Fab 4 club’.
Rohit Sharma has been phenomenal with the bat throughout the Test series against England as he scored 368 runs from eight innings at an average of 52.57 so far and in the fourth Test at Oval, he registered his first overseas Test century.
The ‘Hitman’ scored 127 off 256 balls, his innings was laced with 14 fours and a six as India notched up a commanding total of 466, a lead of 367 to win the match by 157 runs.
Rohit Sharma’s name is going to be included if it is not already there: Aakash Chopra
The Fab 4 is a fantasy club created by cricket lovers which comprise the top four batsmen in the world namely Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Kane Williamson and Steve Smith. Chopra demands the inclusion of Rohit and wants the fantasy club to be renamed ‘Fab 5’.
“I feel you should change the Fab 4 to Fab 5, Rohit Sharma’s name is going to be included if it is not already there because there is no competition for him in white-ball cricket and the way he is playing in red-ball cricket, he has tasted blood,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
“He enjoys leaving or defending the ball and playing shots is in his DNA. So, bowlers beware, it is not going to be Fab 4 anymore, it will be Fab 5 and Rohit Sharma will be a part of it,” he added.
Rohit Sharma has shown how much he loves Test format: Aakash Chopra
Rohit struggled in his early Test days when he batted in the middle-order, he averaged 39.62 batting between no.3-no.6, but has been a revelation as an opener. In just 27 innings he has amassed 1462 runs at an average of 58.48, laced by five centuries.
Chopra feels that in this calendar year, Rohit has proven himself as one of the best batsmen in Test cricket and he should not look into the past.
“I feel there will be just one trajectory of his career from now onwards, he will not look back. The one question that was there about Rohit Sharma, the Test cricketer, this series and the last six to eight months, Rohit has shown how much he loves this format and he will go to any length to actually become an established Test cricketer,” Chopra mentioned.
“Rohit Sharma has got a new-found love for this type of batting and this relationship is beautiful. I am very impressed that he changed his approach of playing because he was extremely hungry,” he added.
India are currently leading the five-match Test series 2-1 and will aim to win the Test series in England after a span of 13 years in Manchester.
