Legendary England cricketer Ian Botham has shared his two cents on the controversy involving the current Test captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson during the ongoing three-match Test series against New Zealand at home.
The two England stars landed in trouble after breaking the team's midnight curfew by spending time at a nightclub. The incident has taken English cricket by storm and resulted in both players being left out of the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval. Amid the episode, Geoffrey Boycott dropped stunning Joe Root vs Ben Stokes captaincy verdict.

However, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were cleared of any serious misconduct after a detailed independent investigation. The inquiry found no evidence of violent behavior or any major wrongdoing. They were only handed written warnings for breaching team discipline rules.
As both Stokes and Atkinson set to return for the third and final Test against the Kiwis at Trent Bridge, Ian Botham said that things were very different during his playing days. The England legend has revealed that there were no strict curfews in his era, but players always understood the importance of behaving responsibly while representing their country.
Ian Botham shares old-school advice for modern cricketers
Botham felt that international cricketers should be smart about where they spend their free time, especially during an important series. He suggested that players should avoid situations that can create unnecessary headlines and distractions for the team.
Ian Botham said on the “Stick to Cricket” podcast: “Curfews? I don't think so, no. No, I don't remember any curfews, no. But, as I say, discretion. And you've got to do that. You've got England supporters there, and you're all walking around. The last place I would go is where they all are in the evenings. Just keep yourself to yourself.”
He further noted, “You might go to a nice restaurant, have good food, and have a nice bottle of wine. That sort of thing, no one's going to worry about that. But when they see the team wobbling down the high street, which I didn't see at all, but it certainly seemed pretty strange to me that you'd lose a test, the second Test, you'd go 2-0 down, and we're going to have five days on the razz.”
Ian Botham fires warning to Ben Stokes
The well-known broadcaster has strongly criticized Ben Stokes over the latest nightclub controversy and also questioned the role of the team's security staff, saying the situation should never have been allowed to reach that stage. Botham warned that the episode could damage Stokes' future after ECB announced squad for India T20I series.
Botham even recalled the past Bristol incident when everyone backed Stokes, and he stood by him as chairman but slammed the captain for the latest regrettable incident.
The Englishman signed off by saying, “He shouldn't have to overrule the captain. It wouldn't surprise me if Ben did lose the captaincy, and he might walk away from the game. It was an unnecessary procedure and one that I think he'll regret.”
