Confirming coach Ricky Ponting’s claims, Prithvi Shaw, the Delhi Capitals opener opens up about why he didn’t want to practice in the nets when he was out of form during last season’s IPL.

Ahead of the IPL 2021, Ponting had disclosed that Prithvi Shaw doesn’t like to bat in the nets when he is struggling for runs in the middle, but keeps on batting in the nets when he is in form.

“He had an interesting theory on his batting last year. When he’s not scoring runs, he won’t bat, and when he is scoring runs, he wants to keep batting all the time,” Ponting had earlier told cricket.com.au.

This revelation by the Australian came in regards to the opener’s unimpressive fall last year. After starting off with a couple of fifties in the UAE, Prithvi Shaw’s form fell off the cliff. He tallied a total of 228 runs from 13 innings at an average of 17.53 before being eventually dropped for the final.

The right-hander was dropped from the Indian Test side as well following his scores of 0 and 4 in the Adelaide Test.

However, he then regained his form. Indeed the 21-year old unleashed a freakish form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy – India’s domestic 50-over tournament – recording 827 runs in 8 matches, averaging 165.40 and striking at 138.29, leading Mumbai to the title.

I just switched off for a bit and took the backseat: Prithvi Shaw

Prithvi Shaw continued his supreme, dominating form in the IPL 2021 as well. He smashed 308 runs in 8 innings at a strike rate of 166.49, helping the Capitals to the top of the table, before the tournament was suspended.

Now, the youngster has opened up on this particular theory of his. Prithvi Shaw explains that when he is out of form, doesn’t matter how much time he spends in the nets, he is not scoring in the middle.

He says he ‘got fed up’ and felt he needed some time away to switch off, hence he refused to bat in the nets last season when he was struggling for runs.

“This happened last year when I was scoring big runs, I wanted to keep batting but then came a few games where I didn’t get runs at all.

“I kept training but didn’t get the results. So beyond a point, I got fed up and said ‘if it’s not happening, I will stop training for a bit’. Because it didn’t make sense for me,” Prithvi Shaw told Cricbuzz.

“I just switched off for a bit and took the backseat. I was so much into it that I would spend two hours batting in the nets but then I didn’t score the runs, I just let go of it for a while. That’s what Ricky sir was talking about,” he elucidated further.

While he was not selected to tour England for the Test matches, Prithvi Shaw is nigh certain to be picked for the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.
