Brad Haddin, a former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman, has spoken out about a nasty altercation he had with former West Indies spinner Sulieman Benn at the WACA in the summer of 2009–2010. Haddin claimed that Benn wasn’t used to accepting sarcasm in exchange.

On Sunday, December 4, when commentating on the Australia-West Indies Test, the former right-handed batter said that Benn had threatened them with a knife after colliding with Mitchell Johnson, a non-striker, while fielding.

Brad Haddin Narrates Altercation With Suleiman Benn

“He used to want to sledge us but he didn’t really want us to hear which wasn’t a great character trait. But then he said something really weird, we were about to head to the T20 World Cup and he said ‘You two won’t get out alive in Barbados, I will stab you’ and I said ‘beg your pardon’ and that then is when it got misty and I don’t really know what happened after that,” Haddin said.

The 45-year-old remembered cautioning the left-arm spinner against doing such things, saying:

“You’re sticking up for your mate, we’ve always been close Jonno and I so I’ve just gone in and pointed the bat and said ‘this is on now, you can’t say things like that.”

Chris Broad, the match referee, fined Haddin and Johnson 25% of their match earnings after they pleaded guilty to a Level 1 Code of Conduct violation. Benn, on the other hand, was benched for two ODIs.

Australia Triumphed In The WACA’s Close Contest

The Australians narrowly defeated the West Indies by 35 runs in Perth to claim a 2-0 series triumph. The foreigners got off to a respectable start as they chased 359 for the victory.

In Perth in 2009, Chris Gayle scored 102 runs off of 72 balls, including 9 fours and 6 sixes. When he finished, the team’s score was only 135 runs.

After losing a few quick wickets, Narsingh Deonarine and Brendan Nash put up a crucial 128-run partnership to keep them in the game. Nevertheless, the home team persisted, with Johnson and Doug Bollinger each claiming three wickets.
