Former England captain Michael Vaughan has rained down on Zak Crawley after the right-hander endured another failure in the Trent Bridge Test against India, and wants him to be dropped from in-form Haseeb Hameed for the second Test at Lord’s.

Zak Crawley registered scores of 27 and 6 in Nottingham; after scoring a magnificent 267 against Pakistan last year, Crawley has been woefully out of form this year – 156 runs in 7 Tests at just 11.14.

Michael Vaughan reckoned the 23-year-old batsman needs some time off the Test cricket to find his rhythm back before travelling to Australia for the all-important Ashes later in the year. The former skipper also has doubts over Dom Sibley’s place as a long-term opener because of his inability to accelerate.

“Zak Crawley could be a high-class Test match player but he’s not got enough runs. I wouldn’t play Crawley at Lord’s but he could well go to Australia. He could suit going out of this environment for a while, play some different formats, iron out his technique. It could refresh him,” Michael Vaughan told BBC Test Match Special.

“Dom Sibley has done enough to stay in the side but you wonder how much further he can progress. He just can’t go up through the gears and the bowlers are able to control him. I would bring Haseeb Hameed in for Zak Crawley. I’d also bring Dawid Malan in but he’s clearly not in England’s Test plans,” he further opined.

That hundred from Joe Root was just pure: Michael Vaughan

Michael Vaughan was effusive in praise for Joe Root, whose hundred on Day 4, single-handedly kept England in the game and helped a decent target of 209.

Other batters got starts but couldn’t cope up against the relentless pressure from the Indian batters, but Root, who has been carrying the side on his shoulders for a while, looked a class apart from the rest of his teammates.

“That was a wonderful day of Test cricket. That hundred from Joe Root – we’ve seen him play plenty of magnificent innings but that was just pure. Those cover drives, the late cuts, the way he played the spinners and Ravindra Jadeja, it was fantastic,” he said.

“He would never admit it but he does carry this batting line-up. And it means he’s not always at his smiley, chirpy best. But he was back there today and it’s exactly what you want to see.

“Joe Root is the sole batter in the team who you feel is of the highest class in Tests. How he can produce that quality under pressure is because he’s got confidence in his technique,” Michael Vaughan concluded.
