Veteran Indian keeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has expressed his displeasure at the Orange Cap award given in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Any player who scores the most number of runs in a single tournament of the IPL earns the Orange Cap. But Dinesh Karthik describes it as one of the silliest awards.

The Orange Cap has been in the IPL from its inception and several reputed players have won it. While the latest holder remains KL Rahul, left-handed explosive opener David Warner bagged it the maximum times, with three. Warner won the Orange Cap in 2015, 2017, and 2019.

Dinesh Karthik revealed that Orange Cap is one of the silliest awards the IPL has kept and feels that the organizers could do better. The 36-year old underlined that players like Kieron Pollard and Andre Russell can hardly win it and openers such as Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock have the maximum chance.

“I think the Orange Cap is one of the silliest awards to give away in the IPL. They (the organizers) could think of it in a much better way. Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell would never win the Orange Cap because they would not get the runs a Rohit Sharma or a Quinton de Kock or any other opener gets,” Karthik told in an interview with Aakash Chopra in his Youtube channel.

We are still in that number of runs and those kind of things: Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik feels that cricketers like Pollard and Russell affect the course of any match than the openers. The Tamil Nadu-born keeper-batsman highlighted that it focus should be more on impact innings than who made the most number of runs.

What they would do though is influence a lot more matches with their batting than the openers during the course of a season. We are still in that number of runs and those kind of things. But (in T20Is) it comes down to that impact things,” he added.
