Legendary India Women’s National Cricket Team batter Mithali Raj has said that she would love to be in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) administration if that comes her way.

Mithali Raj announced her retirement from all forms of international cricket on June 8. She played 232 ODIs, 12 Tests and 89 T20Is for the India Women’s National Cricket Team and scored 7805 runs at an average of 50.7 in ODIs, 699 runs at an average of 43.68 in Tests and 2364 runs at an average of 37.52 in T20Is.

Speaking to India Today, Mithali Raj said that she can put her experience to good use if she is in the BCCI administration. She also gave the example of Clare Connor and Belinda Clark and said that women understand women’s cricket much better.

“I would love to (be in administration) if that comes my way, knowing the sort of experience I have had over the years. Being a player, seeing the different phases maybe yeah, I can use my experience to good use,” the former cricketer said while speaking to India Today.

“You can have a woman in a certain position because women understand women’s cricket much better. I would say that because they have been over the years part of the team and fraternity. Like how Belinda Clark has got her experience to shape Cricket Australia or for that matter Clare Connor has done a great job with ECB. If given opportunities, I’m sure women can be efficient in jobs that they can do for women’s cricket in administration.”

I’m definitely looking forward to be involved with the sport – Mithali Raj

Legendary Indian cricketer Mithali Raj further said that she will take her time to make a decision on her future after retirement but confirmed that she will be looking forward to being involved in cricket.

“I have just announced my retirement, so maybe you can give me a few more days (to think about future plans). If I can enjoy my holidays without even thinking about what I have to plan for the future maybe for the very first time in years.

“Let’s see, because I think it is such a good phase for women cricketers after retirement, there are so many avenues now. Let’s see what excites me, but I’m definitely looking forward to be involved with the sport, that’s for sure, but in what capacity, let’s see as time progresses,” she said.

“Most of my teammates today remember me as someone who stood from the other end and gave them confidence while batting out there. They knew that India still had a chance if I was there. So that sort of confidence and dependency they had on me, I would like people to remember me or my innings,” said Mithali Raj when asked how she wants to be remembered.

India will be starting their transition phase with the forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka. The T20I series between the teams will be played on June 23, 25 and 27 while the ODI series will be held on July 1, 4 and 7.

Meanwhile, Mithali Raj named Shafali Verma, Yastika Bhatia, and Richa Ghosh as future India stars.

“Every young player who has come through the ranks has a good future. We foresee good future in good potential but in the current generation how you mould a raw talent is very important because with the inception of social media and distractions that we have, it is important to nurture the talent, and mentor them properly so that we can serve the team for a long time.

“Talent has never been in deficit for us. There is enough talent but how many of them actually make it to the top and how many of them continue to play at that level of cricket is what we need to be looked in to,” she said.

“It will be good to see young players like Yastika, Shafali and Richa. These girls have come in the last year, they have shown a glimpse of the potential of playing for good 10 years but again it depends on how they conduct themselves, how they work hard because international cricket is not one or two series.

“With every series, the standard improves and players come prepared as technology in today’s time… your game is out there for everybody to read so how a player prepares before every season is just as crucial,” she said.
