As fans eagerly await news about MS Dhonis future and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend continues to remain silent, former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has added fuel to the fire with a bold statement after the franchise failed to make it to the IPL 2025 playoffs.

Bangar has pointed out that MS Dhoni has achieved everything in the IPL, not just as a player, but also as a leader who made Chennai Super Kings a champion side and led them to five titles. He emphasized that there is nothing to prove for Dhoni, and the time has come for him to quit the game.

Sanjay Bangar drops a bombshell on MS Dhoni’s IPL future

The iconic wicketkeeper-batter has already won titles, built legacies, and guided a smooth transition, but by staying on, he is actually delaying the team’s transition, even if done with good intentions, according to the former Indian batting coach.

Sanjay Bangar was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo, “It all boils down to MS, but if I were MS, I would say enough. That, okay, I've played whatever I wanted to play, and I've looked after the interest of the franchise as well, if there is any, if that was the motivation. But, you know, you move on because maybe you allow that… By you being there, if you're thinking that the transition will happen fast, there's never an ideal time to pick.”

Sanjay Bangar urges MS Dhoni to allow CSK to grow on its own

Bangar suggested that it might be wiser for Dhoni to call time on his glorious IPL career and allow CSK to grow on its own, even if it takes a little longer, as it is time for the next generation to steer the ship. The former RCB and PBKS coach said that he would have taken that call if he were MSD.

He signed off by saying, “So, you might as well have peace with the fact that, okay, even if I leave now, the franchise will develop on its own. Maybe it'll take a year longer, but I'm not going to be here for the entire cycle. So, that's how I would look at MS's position if I were in that position.”

MS Dhoni's IPL legacy in the numbers

Apart from leading CSK to five titles - the joint most in IPL history along with Mumbai Indians, Dhoni is one of the all-time leading run scorers in the tournament. The former Indian captain has so far played 277 IPL matches and amassed 5439 runs at an average of 38.30 and a strike rate of 137.45. Dhoni has 24 fifties, 375 boundaries, and 264 sixes to his name in the IPL.

Additionally, the CSK captain MS Dhoni effected close to 200 dismissals behind the stumps. Chennai will play their last game of this season against Gujarat Titans on May 25 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. They are currently the bottom-ranked team in the IPL 2025 with only 6 points from 13 games.
