Bangladesh is all set to host the next International Cricket Council (ICC) board meeting, with speculation swirling around the possibility of an election for the sport's global governing body. The announcement was made by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan on July 28.

The next ICC board meeting is scheduled to take place in Dhaka. There is a strong possibility that the election for the ICC chairman will also be conducted during this meeting.

Actually, the current ICC chairman Greg Barclay’s second two-year term is all set to conclude later this year, and the upcoming board meeting will likely serve as a platform for determining the future leadership of the ICC.

Nazmul hinted that the next ICC meeting will be Barclay’s last one, as it will be held at the time when his term is set to expire. The BCB president also expressed confidence that the election order would be finalized during this important meeting.

As reported by Cricbuzz, Nazmul Hasan said at an impromptu press conference at the secretariat: “It has been confirmed that the next ICC board meeting will be in Dhaka. Possibly the election [ICC] would take place here. I think there will be an election (in the ICC) as the current chairman will have the last board meeting. We are expected to give our election mandate by this time.”

Meanwhile, the BCB president revealed that the ICC had expressed concerns about recent unrest in Bangladesh, but he reassured the governing body that they remain committed to hosting the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup 2024 at the latest board meeting.

Earlier, the BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury and Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, head of the BCB women’s wing, had conveyed similar assurances to the ICC and other cricket boards. However, the ICC had been closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh, particularly after the government declared an emergency last week in response to widespread public protests.

Despite the challenges, Nazmul confirmed that the representatives from various countries were reassured about Bangladesh’s ability to host the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup 2024 as per schedule following his assurance at the ICC meeting in Sri Lanka.

The BCB president signed off by saying, “When I went there, the situation of the country was very bad, and there was no communication with Bangladesh from outside, and the news they were getting was something they were quite afraid of. But after seeing me, they said at least they are convinced that everything is alright in the country.

After that, there was no discussion about it, and all they wanted to know was what had happened. For us, the important thing is the Women's World Cup that we will host here.”

Notably, Bangladesh Women’s Cricket Team recently participated in the Asia Cup 2024, which was later won by the hosts Sri Lanka. Bangladesh were denied the final berth at the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 by India Women, suffering a 10 wicket loss in the semifinals. However, India lost the title to Sri Lanka Women after facing an eight-wicket defeat in the summit clash.
