Australia vs South Africa ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match gets washed out

There was a delay in the toss ahead of the first-ever ICC Champions Trophy match between the Proteas and the Aussies. It was expected that the match would get underway after a slight delay as the weather in the city started to look good after a while.

At a point in time, the covers were also removed by the ground staff, and there was a hope that the high-voltage battle between the top teams would be witnessed.

However, rain didn't allow that to happen as it picked up after some time, and ground staff were forced to cover the pitch once again. With the cut-off time being 7:32 pm, there was no way the ground could have been readied for a 20-over contest.

Hence, the decision was made to call off the match and both the teams shared one point each, making the upcoming match between England and Afghanistan a virtual knockout.

What Happened In The Previous ODI Between South Africa And Australia?

The previous ODI match between Australia and South Africa was held on November 16, during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-final at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. It was a good encounter between the top teams that ended with Australia securing a hard-fought 3-wicket victory.

Electing to bat first, the Proteas struggled against a dangerous Australia bowling attack. South Africa lost early wickets, with captain Temba Bavuma departing for a duck and star players Quinton de Kock (3) and Rassie van der Dussen (6) failing to make an impact.

Heinrich Klaasen provided some stability to the innings with a 47-run knock, but the best performance came from David Miller's bat.

The explosive middle-order batsman fought well with a brilliant 101 runs off 116 balls innings. Despite Miller's sensational efforts, South Africa were bowled out for 212 in 49.4 overs.

For the Aussies, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins bagged three wickets each while Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood contributed with two wickets each.

Chasing the target, Australia got off to a flying start, thanks to Travis Head's explosive 62-run knock and David Warner's quickfire 29-run innings.

However, South Africa fought back, with Aiden Markram, Gerald Coetzee, and Tabraiz Shamsi chipping in with key wickets. Steve Smith and Josh Inglis kept Australia steady with their cautious knocks, and in the end, captain Pat Cummins (14*) and Mitchell Starc (16*) held their nerves and steered Australia to victory in 47.2 overs.
