ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Umar Gul Names Pakistan's Best Possible Pace Bowling Attack For The Marquee Event

Veteran pacer Umar Gul named his fast bowling attack, consisting of five pacers, for the upcoming edition of the ODI World Cup, which will be held in India later this year. Umar Gul urged the selectors to back Pakistan’s fast bowling department at the marquee event.

Umar Gul was the bowling coach of the national cricket team in the recent series against Afghanistan and New Zealand. Earlier, the former right-arm pacer served as the bowling coach of the Afghanistan team in the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup 2022 in Australia.

In an exclusive interview with Cricket Pakistan, Umar Gul stated that the Men in Green have a balanced bowling attack with pacers and spinners.

“If you talk about our bowling, the pace attack that we had during the New Zealand series should be retained and these are our best bowlers for the World Cup. They are Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, Ihsanullah and Mohammad Wasim Jr,” Gul said.

“If you talk about spin attack, knowing that the mega-event is being played in India, then you require help from your spinners, you have top all-rounders, like Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, and I think we have an excellent and balanced bowling side.

“We have a lot of expectations from the bowlers and if we go there and participate in the World Cup, then the results can be positive and we have a lot of chances on winning the tournament,” he added.

The 40-year-old said that the pace trio of Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf will start in the World Cup. Gul said that Pakistan should try Ihsanullah and Wasim Jr. in the Asia Cup in order to test their skills against international teams.

“The first choice will be the trio pace attack of Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf for the mega-event, but if you look at the bench then you need to have the availability of Ihsanullah and Waseem Jr. In my opinion, Ihsanullah and Wasim should be given chances in the Asia Cup,” he said.

“Before the World Cup we have to try Ihsanullah in the few matches we get, in order to know if he is ready to play the fifty-over format, because there will be competitive cricket in the international level and I know he has the potential to serve Pakistan in the future,” he concluded.
