Australia is optimistic that vice-captain Alyssa Healy will be able to play in Thursday’s nail-biting ICC Women’s T20 World Cup semifinal. Healy missed Australia’s decisive six-wicket victory over South Africa on Saturday in Gqeberha due to a quad injury, however, team management described it as merely minor.

As per the star all-rounder Tahlia McGrath, the choice to rest the veteran wicket-keeper batter for the game against the Proteas was made just to give her some more rest after she had just recently recovered from a calf ailment earlier in the tournament.

Australia Expecting Alyssa Healy To Be Fully Fit For The Semi-finals

“It was more of a precautionary measure with coming off a serious calf injury and with a pretty hectic schedule,” McGrath said.

“We expect her to be fully fit and ready to go for us in the semi-finals.”

Australia’s potent middle order, who made their pursuit against South Africa appear simple, sealed their triumph. After Healy was injured, McGrath stepped up with the bat against South Africa, scoring a crucial 57 to put her team within striking distance of victory. The 27-year-old McGrath was pleased to rediscover some excellent form during the crucial part of the tournament because it was his first notable inning at the competition thus far.

“It’s a big relief,” McGrath said.

“I haven’t been batting overly well and I’ve lacked some time in the middle, so I was a bit nervous to start off with. It’s been nice watching the batters at the top order do their thing, but yeah, also nice to get an opportunity tonight.”

In the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, Tahlia McGrath led her side to the semifinals with a half-century versus South Africa in 29 balls, earning Player of the Match honours.

Australia’s semi-final opposition is still to be determined, but after losing to England on Saturday, India is the most likely candidate. Australia already knows that their T20 World Cup semifinal will take place in Cape Town, a city they have yet to visit during their four-match winning streak.

Squad Depth Our Biggest Strength: Tahlia McGrath

Healy’s replacement, the young all-rounder Annabel Sutherland, performed excellently against South Africa, and McGrath thinks one of Australia’s great assets is their depth in the team.

“We’ve got such a strong squad here and we’re playing some really good cricket, but four wins means nothing when you get to knockout finals, so we’re going to have to be at our best and there’s some quality teams in the competition,” McGrath noted.

“That’s absolutely our biggest strength, that we’ve got so many options. So many players can play different roles and it seems to be someone different sticks their hand up every time. We’re all in really good form at the moment with the bat, with the ball, we’ve got a really strong squad over here, so we go into those semi-finals full of confidence.”
