The BCCI, on Tuesday (September 5), announced the 15-member India squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023. The thirteenth edition of the World Cup is scheduled to be played from October 5 to November 19 in India.

Having co-hosted the World Cup thrice in the past, India will host the tournament alone for the first time. The tournament is also returning to India for the first time since 2011. The ODI World Cup will be played across ten venues – Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Dharamsala, Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Pune, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Kolkata. Two more venues, Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram, will host the warm-up games.

The first game and the final are scheduled to be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Reigning champions England and New Zealand will be up against each other in the tournament opener on October 5. On the other hand, India will open their campaign against five-time world champions Australia on October 8 in Chennai.

Team India will be desperate to end their long wait for the World Cup this year. The Men in Blue have not won the trophy since 2011. They crashed out at the semifinal stage in the last two editions of the tournament and will be looking to go all the way in the forthcoming edition.

India squad for ICC World Cup 2023:

Sitting alongside captain Rohit Sharma, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, on Tuesday, finalised India’s 15-member squad for the World Cup. While announcing the Asia Cup squad last month, Agarkar had said that the team for the World Cup won’t be much different to the one picked for the Asia Cup and he remained true to his words.

15 of the 17 members named for the Asia Cup have been picked for the World Cup. The two players who missed out are Tilak Varma and Prasidh Krishna. Sanju Samson who was picked in the Asia Cup squad as a traveling reserve has also missed out.

The selectors and the team-management have also snubbed ace spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin for the marquee event. Chahal was a part of the Indian squad for the 2019 World Cup but has fallen down the pecking order in recent times. Ashwin is also not a regular in the ODI team anymore.

The teams are allowed to make changes to their World Cup squad till September 28.
