ICC World Cup 2023: "Like We Thought Varun Chakravarthy" - Rohit Sharma Says Talented Players Can Come In Straightaway

India skipper Rohit Sharma talked about the team combination for the ICC World Cup 2023. He said that they can’t play all the players with experience and therefore young players might come in straightway to find the right balance.

Indian squad for the ICC World Cup 2023 is the most talked about thing in Indian cricket. With the marquee event just less than 3 months away from now, there’s no clarity about who’ll make the cut into the team for the event as quite a few players are injured as well.

As per the various reports BCCI have shortlisted players for the World Cup and they will be assessing those players before cutting the squad down to the final 15. Some of the youngsters too have been doing well whereas a few senior players are out of form as well.

Rohit Sharma said that they need to analyze all the crucial aspects and make all the departments very strong before naming the final squad and therefore they will be giving chances to players. Speaking to reporters, he explained (as quoted by PTI):

“We keep talking about preparation. Yes, we’ve to be prepared, but at the same time, there are a lot of other factors like ‘who are the right guys? How we can fit in guys in the squad? “What are the challenges that we’re going to face during the World Cup? Where’s the hole in our team, whether it’s batting or bowling?

“We’ve to make all our departments strong, and for that, we need to give chances to our players. If you don’t play them, you won’t know (about their worth). Our focus has always been on that, even last year, before the T20 World Cup, we were focusing on those kinds of things.”

Rohit Sharma while citing the example of Varun Chakravarthy’s selection during T20 World Cup 2021 made a bold statement, saying that if the team feels a player can do a specific job for them, he might straightaway find a place in the XI.

“There will be guys whom you think are talented, and can do the job, they can straightaway come in. Like we thought Varun Chakravarthy, for the 2021 T20 World Cup. I don’t think he played any international cricket before that. But we genuinely thought he was ready for that stage.”

Rohit Sharma further added that players who will play World Cup might not get all the games before that as there can be exceptions and 2-3 players without experience can be there as well. He elaborated:

“It’s not like we’ve to compulsorily give 15 games to a player, there can be exceptions to this. But, you can’t do it with everyone. You need experience. You need the guys who can go and handle that pressure in the middle. However, 2-3 guys can be like that (without experience),” he concluded.
