Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa believes that the selectors and team management are likely to consider young batter Tilak Varma for the upcoming ODI World Cup. Robin Uthappa emphasized that Tilak Varma has the potential to serve the Indian team for an extended period.

Tilak Varma earned his maiden call-up to the national team for the T20I series against the West Indies. The left-handed batter made a significant impact with his batting during the five-match series, amassing 173 runs in five innings at an impressive average of 43.25 and a strike rate of 130.08.

Tilak Varma Can Serve The Team For A Long Time – Robin Uthappa

Speaking to JioCinema, Robin Uthappa lauded Tilak Varma for his brilliant batting performances in the recently concluded T20I series.

“Yeah. Certainly, he will be discussed by the selectors as well, because if you want to look at someone who can serve the team for a long time and he seems like he’s got a pretty good head on his shoulders, and he goes about his business in a very diligent way,” Uthappa told JioCinema.

The 20-year-old was the leading run-getter for India in the series. Overall, he is the third-leading run-getter, behind West Indies batters Nicholas Pooran and Brendon King.

The former Indian opener described Tilak Varma as a responsible batter and highlighted his ability to contribute to the team in all three departments.

“We know that he’s someone who can be responsible. And even today, the kind of partnership he stitched up after the first two wickets fell. Well, you know, you saw that that responsibility, uh, taking on responsibility, which is quite nice,” he further added.

“And then when you get the ball, like, you know, I’ll try and go for it. Try and get a wicket. He got a wicket. He almost got two taken that catch. Uh, you know, the return catch. So, you know, in that sense, the stuff is there. Uh, and the fact that he’s a left-hander,” he concluded.

Middle-order batters KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are still recovering from their injuries at the NCA in Bengaluru. The team management tried Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson in the last ODI series as Iyer and Rahul’s backups for the World Cup.
