Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has recommended that the team management groom young cricketers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma as batting all-rounders. Wasim Jaffer emphasized Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma should bowl more overs during the practice sessions.
Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal play as batsmen in the Indian Premier League (IPL). During the cash-rich league, Tilak bowled only three overs in 25 matches, while Jaiswal bowled a solitary over. In the current Indian lineup, none of the top five batters can offer part-time spin bowling.
Don’t Think They Are Ready To Bowl – Wasim Jaffer
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Wasim Jaffer expressed uncertainty about Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal being prepared to bowl in international cricket. Jaffer advised them to consistently bowl in domestic matches to enhance their bowling skills.
“I don’t think they (Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal) are ready to bowl at the international level. I think Tilak Varma can because I have seen him bowl a little bit. But Yashasvi Jaiswal, you still have to wait,” Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.
“They are encouraging them to bowl more in the nets, and as and when they come back to domestic cricket, you will see them bowling, and they should because India clearly lack one of their batters to turn their arm over,” he added.
India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey recently revealed in a press conference that there are plans for both Varma and Jaiswal to contribute with the ball by bowling at least one over each in upcoming matches.
No Harm In Grooming – Wasim Jaffer
The renowned commentator said that India had the luxury of part-time bowling options during their World Cup-winning campaigns in 2007 and 2011.
“The 2007 or 2011 World Cup-winning teams had so many options from the top order batsmen who could bowl. So, no harm in grooming because I know Yashasvi Jaiswla can bowl decent leg spin, but still I would say it is not international standard,” he further added.
“Same with Tilak Varma. He can be groomed into a decent off-spinner. When you get so many left-handers in the opposite side, you can squeeze in one or two overs from him. I think he is probably ready to bowl, if and when Hardik Pandya feels confident about it,” he concluded.
