ICC World Cup Points Table 2023: Updated Standings, Most Runs, Most Wickets After NED vs AFG match:??Afghanistan, on Friday (November 3), thrashed the Netherlands by 7 wickets at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium to move to the fifth spot in the points table.
Chasing a modest total of 180 runs, Afghanistan made a shaky start and lost both of their openers – Rahmanullah Gurbaz (10) and Ibrahim Zadran (20) – cheaply. However, veteran batter Rahmat Shah and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi steadied the ship and laid the foundation for a successful chase by adding 74 runs for the third wicket.
Saqib Zulfiqar broke the stand by dismissing Shah for 52. Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai then ensured that their team crossed the finishing line without suffering any further hiccups. The duo shared an unbeaten stand of 52 runs as Afghanistan crossed the finishing line in the 32nd over to register their fourth win of the tournament.
Earlier, the Netherlands won the toss and opted to bat first but failed to justify the decision. The Scott Edwards-led side was bowled out for a modest total of 179 runs inside 47 overs. Four of their top five batters were run out during the poor bowling display.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman gave his side the perfect start by dismissing Wesley Barresi for just 1 in the first over. It was followed by a 70-run stand between Max O’Dowd and Colin Ackermann before the former was run out for 42. 19 runs later, Ackermann was run-out for 29 and it triggered a collapse that saw the Netherlands getting reduced to 97 for 5 from 92 for 2.
With wickets falling at regular intervals, the innings never really got the impetus. At one stage, even the 150-run mark was looking like a distant dream but Sybrand Engelbrecht stood firm at one end and scored a fighting fifty to help his team post a respectable total.
