India National Cricket Team and England National Cricket Team started off their ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle with a battle against each other.

The first Test of the five-match series between the Shubman Gill-led India National Cricket Team and Ben Stokes-led England National Cricket Team was hosted by Headingley in Leeds from June 20 to 24.

Three centurions for Team India in the first innings

Ben Stokes & Co. won the toss and invited the visiting team to bat first in the match. They faced a lot of criticism for this move because the conditions on the offer were really good to bat and the Shubman Gill-led side made the most of it.

KL Rahul (42) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) provided a solid start, and they were mostly untroubled by Chris Woakes, Josh Tongue, and Brydon Carse.

After the openers departed, Shubman Gill, captaining India for the first time in Tests, led from the front and hit a magnificent unbeaten 147 runs, showing good maturity.

Rishabh Pant (134) became India's third centurion in the innings by playing an amazing knock, but the visitors suffered a shocking collapse and lost 7 wickets for just 41 runs to get bundled for 471. For the hosts, Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue bagged 4 wickets each.

England also batted brilliantly in their first innings, and in contrast to India, they came up with a proper team effort instead of overdependence on a few batters.

Ollie Pope and Harry Brook were the top two performers with the bat as the former scored 106 runs and the latter scored a brisk 99. England got bundled for 456, giving India a small lead. For the visitors, Jasprit Bumrah was the hero in the innings as he bagged a sensational 5-wicket haul despite several dropped catches.

India post a 371-run target on board for England

In their second innings with the bat, India once again did a wonderful job. This time, there were two centurions - KL Rahul (137) and Rishabh Pant (118) - as the visitors ended up with a score of 364, setting up a target of 371 for the hosts.

Just like the first innings, India's score could have been bigger had they not suffered a shocking collapse with the lower-order making no contribution. For England, Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue bagged three wickets each in the third innings of the match.

Chasing the target, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett batted brilliantly and stitched up a stunning 188-run opening stand to put India under tremendous pressure.

Ben Duckett played a knock for the ages as he smashed 149 runs off 170 balls. Even though two wickets each from Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur helped India make a mini comeback, the Three Lions managed to complete the run-chase easily with Joe Root (53*) and Jamie Smith (44*) remaining unbeaten in the middle. England won the match by 5 wickets and took a 1-0 lead in the series.
