If Rohit Sharma Is Fit, Why Can't He Be The Captain In Tests Too – Ravi Shastri

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has opined that Rohit Sharma should be appointed as the new Test captain of the Indian team after Virat Kohli stepped down from captaincy.

India’s white-ball captain Rohit Sharma, was named as Virat Kohli’s deputy in Tests in December last year after Ajinkya Rahane was demoted after an extremely poor run with the bat for a long period of time. However, Rohit suffered a hamstring injury and was ruled out of the three-match Test series against South Africa and KL Rahul was appointed as the new vice-captain for the series.

Speaking to India Today, Ravi Shastri, said that there is no problem in elevating Rohit Sharma from vice-captaincy to captain of the Test team, provided the 34-year-old maintains his fitness.

“If Rohit is fit, why can’t he be the captain in Tests too. He was appointed vice-captain for the South Africa series but he couldn’t go there because of injuries. So why not, if he was made the vice-captain, why can’t he be promoted to a captaincy.” Ravi Shastri, who is in Oman as Commissioner of Legends League Cricket, said.

He added that head coach Rahul Dravid needs to look out for a Test vice-captain in the team. However, Shastri opined that there is no need to announce vice-captain in advance.

“Rohit’s vice-captain has to be seen. Rahul Dravid has to see who that person could be because that player has to be a certainty in the playing XI. I think, why name the vice-captain at all? Decide on the tour who is the most experienced player, who is playing well. You announce your vice-captain in advance, and later you realise that your vice-captain doesn’t fit in your XI,” he added.

Rishabh Pant should always be kept in mind for leadership – Ravi Shastri

Former India head coach, while talking about young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, said that he always puts his team first and the management should keep his name in mind for future leadership.

“Rishabh is a tremendous young player. As a coach, I was very fond of him, his attitude and the good thing about him was that he would always listen to you. A lot of people say, he always does what he wants but that’s not true. He reads the game well and would always put my team effort first than self. So he should always be kept in mind for leadership,” Shastri said
