“If There’s One Thing He Does Not Lack Is His Confidence” – Dinesh Karthik On Shardul Thakur

The 37-year-old India National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik praised the fast-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur, asserting that the 30-year-old has a lot of confidence in his skills.

Thakur made his Test debut for India National Cricket Team in 2018 against West Indies National Cricket Team. He played the second Test match of his career in 2021 against Australia at the Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba, Brisbane.

The fast-bowling all-rounder scored 67 runs with the bat in the first innings of the match and bagged 7 wickets across two innings to eventually help India register a historic Test series win. Thakur’s impressive performance in the high-profile game against Australia played a big role in helping him become a key member of Team India’s red-ball setup, especially in away games.

Shardul Thakur has so far played 8 Test matches for the India National Cricket Team. He has picked up 27 Test wickets at an average of 24.4 and an economy of 3.57. With the bat, he has contributed 254 runs at an average of 19.5.

While talking about Thakur, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik said that the pace-bowling all-rounder had bagged 300 wickets in domestic cricket before representing India in the purest format of the game.

“A lot of people thought he was new and saw him in that Test series, but I’ve seen him from 2012, playing for Bombay, coming in when there were probably not many people watching Ranji Trophy. 

“What I’ve liked that he had taken 300 domestic wickets before playing Test cricket and that would keep a bowler in good stead. So when I saw him in England, the first thing I wanted to see was are they able to transfer the confidence to the international level. And there is one thing that he’s answered very clearly. If there’s one thing he does not lack is his confidence,” said Karthik on Cricbuzz’s Summer Stalemate.

Thakur’s one of the most memorable performances came in the 4th Test match of the series in 2021 against England at the Kennington Oval, London, where he smashed sensational half-centuries and bagged 3 wickets in the match, including a huge wicket of Joe Root that triggered a batting collapse.
