Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh said that he never got an opportunity to lead the Indian team because he didn’t had any strong connections in BCCI.
Last month, Harbhajan announced his retirement from all formats after playing the games for more than two decades.
Harbhajan Singh picked 711 international wickets
Harbhajan, who snapped 711 international wickets from 367 matches across all formats, had started his international career under Mohammad Azharuddin‘s captaincy in 1998.

Harbhajan’s career progressed under Sourav Ganguly’s leadership and his final days were played under MS Dhoni. The Turbanator was never looked at as a leader of the Indian team, although he did lead Mumbai Indians in the 2011 Champions League T20 title.
No regrets either if I didn’t become the captain: Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan said that during his time to become the captain of the Indian team, one required close ties with the BCCI top officials. The 41-year-old has no regrets of not getting the opportunity to lead in India and is content with the fact that he played for his country.
“Oh yes! That is also an achievement that no one talks about – my captaincy. I didn’t know anyone in the BCCI; someone who could push my case because it is required (for the national captaincy). If you are not among the favourites of someone, you don’t get such honours,” Harbhajan told Cricketnext.com.
“But, let’s leave that topic. I know I was capable enough (to lead) as we used to guide a lot of captains. No big deal if I was an India captain or not. No regrets either if I didn’t become the captain for my country. I was always happy to serve the nation as a player,” he added.
Harbhajan is likely to take up a coaching role with one of the franchises in the IPL after playing with three different franchises for a total of 14 years.
