Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer credited skipper MS Dhoni for the success of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Jaffer believes that CSK would not be strong contenders for the title in the upcoming seasons without the leadership of MS Dhoni.

MS Dhoni led the Super Kings to their fifth IPL title in the previous edition. The CSK emerged victorious in a thrilling final against the Gujarat Titans (GT) earlier this year. He became the most successful captain in IPL history, equaling Rohit Sharma for the record of winning five titles.

CSK’s Success Is Attached To Dhoni – Wasim Jaffer

In an interview with Sportskeeda, Wasim Jaffer pointed out that MS Dhoni used his limited bowling resources well to guide the team to victory in the final of the IPL 2023.

“CSK’s success is attached to Dhoni. If you leave MS Dhoni out of that team, I don’t think CSK will remain the same CSK without doubt. Taking such a team and leading them to an IPL trophy win, only Dhoni can do it,” Jaffer said.

“They had very limited resources this year, especially if you look at their bowling. There is Tushar Deshpande, he’s played IPL, but had no success [before].

Matheesha Pathirana was new, while Akash Singh played the initial games. Deepak Chahar got injured for half of the tournament. Maheesh Theekshana is also not the greatest name in the IPL. Moeen Ali did not bowl and [Ravindra] Jadeja again…,” he added.

CSK’s Success Is Because Of Him – Wasim Jaffer

The former India opener said that the team would find it challenging to qualify for the playoffs without MS Dhoni.

“To win the IPL with such a bowling attack, only MS Dhoni can do it. Only he knows how to best utilize the resources available. CSK’s success is because of him. Take MS Dhoni away and they will struggle to make the qualifiers,” he concluded.

Under Dhoni’s captaincy, CSK won the IPL in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021 and also secured two Champions League titles in 2010 and 2014. Dhoni has played 250 IPL matches, scoring 5082 runs at an average of 38.79. He is the most successful captain in IPL history, with 133 wins from 226 matches.
