Legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has said that he is not surprised with the decision of Virat Kohli to relinquish the Test captaincy.

On 15 January 2022, Virat Kohli shocked the cricketing world with his announcement regarding leaving the Test captaincy. Previously, Kohli had also relinquished the T20I captaincy and was removed from ODI captaincy because the BCCI selectors didn’t want to have two white-ball captains in the team.

Meanwhile, Kohli’s decision to step down from Test captaincy came just after India’s Test series defeat against South Africa by 1-2 and the batting legend Gavaskar has said that he thought that Kohli would have announced his captaincy quitting decision in the presentation ceremony after the Test series against South Africa.

“I’m not surprised at all. I thought that it might have come at the presentation ceremony, but that would have looked like it has come out of a sense of anger having lost the series. So, I think a little bit of gap and the decision has come,” Gavaskar said on India Today.

Gavaskar added that the BCCI doesn’t take the overseas series defeats “ too kindly ” and the captain is always in danger of being sacked.

“As a captain, I have experienced that series defeats overseas are not taken too kindly by the board and the cricket-loving public or board officials. The captain is in danger of being sacked. That has happened in the past and I’m pretty certain that this could have happened this time around because this was a series that India was expected to win and win easily,” he added.

Sunil Gavaskar was asked if Virat Kohli in a way pre-empted what was possible that the BCCI would have sacked him because of the Test series defeat against South Africa, to which he replied:

“There is every possibility of that, looking at what had transpired earlier on.”

“Looking at the fact that he had been removed as ODI captain. Yes, having lost this series, that was always possible. If you don’t win, what happens? Doesn’t matter if he’s been individually successful, in a team sport, the captain is the one where the buck stops.”

Meanwhile, if reports are to be believed Rohit Sharma is set to become the new Test captain of the Indian team and KL Rahul is set to be his deputy.
