Assam-born Uncapped batter Riyan Parag, who had an explosive IPL 2024 season, feels that the run-scoring mania that we saw this season is temporary.

The recently concluded Indian Premier League 2024 season will be remembered for quite a lot of things and the scoring spree is one of them. Teams came up with a solid game plan this season that they want to punish opposing bowling attacks right from the start and right from the word go.

This strategy was very beneficial for every single team that adopted it but the pioneers were the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma were largely responsible for the trend but towards the end of the season, all of it just happened to fade away. But we experienced some sensational batting performances regardless.

What did Riyan Parag say?

In an exclusive interview given to Hindustan Times, Riyan Parag had his say about the batters doing extraordinary things in the IPL 2024 season. The right-hand batter, who had gone through his highest-scoring season this year, feels that the run-scoring mania was just a temporary thing. Just like some players are one-season wonders, the 250+ scores were also a one-season thing.

"I think it was just a one-season thing." - Parag told Hindustan Times. The 22-year-old then went on to further claim that the Impact Player ruling also contributed to such gigantic runs being scored by the opposition.

Parag feels that the Impact substitution has changed things for the opening batters, who have the pressure of getting their team off to a flyer by not losing their wicket. But when teams adopt an aggressive approach, as the Sunrisers Hyderabad did, the scare of losing wickets increases as that particular style of play is full of risks.

And one cannot expect an opening pair to always deliver fiery starts, something that happened with Hyderabad openers in the IPL 2024 playoffs. Riyan Parag feels that the Impact Player substitution has removed a lot of pressure from the openers as they can now play freely, knowing they have an extra batter in the order.

"The Impact Player rule has, of course, changed things because now openers are just hands-free and can smack from ball one." - Parag added.

Parag believes Impact Player ruling will change in the future

Riyan Parag then affirmed that the Impact Player ruling will not last long in the Indian Premier League circuit. He feels the rules will change and that will bring about a difference in IPL itself in the future. But since the rule is never going to be implemented at the International level, everyone will have to value their wicket.

That the risk-filled style of play doesn't have a future and batters cannot give their wickets in the first ball. "I feel the rule might change and the IPL might go down differently in the future. It’s never going to happen in international cricket, right, so everyone has to value their wicket. You know you can’t lose your wicket off the first ball. - Riyan Parag concluded.
