Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar has advised Ishan Kishan to be patient to do well with the bat after his failure against Australia on Sunday (October 8). The southpaw made his World Cup debut in the huge clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai but failed to do well.
Ishan Kishan was likely to warm the bench for the match but with Shubman Gill down with dengue, the left-handed got the opportunity to partner captain Rohit Sharma at the top of the batting order. He also had the opportunity to take his time and get set as India were given a modest total of 200 runs by Australia.
However, Ishan Kishan failed to grab the opportunity and was dismissed for a golden duck. He ended up edging Mitchell Starc’s wide delivery behind the stumps to Cameron Green at first slip. Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer also failed to open their accounts but India eventually managed to cross the finishing line and won the game by six wickets.
Shoaib Akhtar’s advice for Ishan Kishan:
With Ishan Kishan failing against Australia, Shoaib Akhtar believes the young batsman needs to be patient to do well. He also advised him to play according to the situation.
“Ishan Kishan should be patient and needs to play according to the situation. I know there is aggression and exuberance of youth, and he wants to stamp his authority and he wants to say that ‘I’ve arrived on the scene’. But he needs to show patience,” Shoaib Akhtar was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.
Speaking further, Akhtar also praised KL Rahul for his knock. The wicketkeeper-batsman played an unbeaten knock of 97 runs and shared a 165-run stand with Virat Kohli for the fourth wicket after India were reduced to 2 for 3.
“KL Rahul showed maturity as he settled in slowly, went through the tough times. And when the ball became wet when the ball started coming to the bat, he started playing his shots,” he said.
Team India will take on Afghanistan in their next match. The match is scheduled to be played in Delhi on Wednesday (October 11). Ishan Kishan is likely to play in that game too as Shubman Gill is still doubtful.
