Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer will turn out for Mumbai in their next Ranji Trophy match against Andhra at MCA’s Bandra-Kurla Complex as per TOI. Iyer was rested for the T20I series against Afghanistan.

Shreyas Iyer played against South Africa in both the Test matches but could not score too many runs. He scored 31, 6, 0, and 4* in his last four knocks in Test cricket. Alongside Iyer, a few other senior Indian players like Ravindra Jadeja, Jaspri Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj have been rested from the Afghanistan T20I series.

The match between Mumbai and Andhra starts on January 12 and an MCA official said that Iyer expressed interest in playing the Ranji match for his stateside. The team will be led by Ajinkya Rahane who was not included in the Indian squad for the Test series that they drew 1-1 against the Proteas.

“Iyer expressed his willingness to play in the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai,” a source in the Mumbai Cricket Association told TOI on Tuesday after the selectors picked the 15-man Mumbai squad for the team’s second Ranji game of the season.

Iyer will take this game as an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming Test series against England that starts on January 25 with the first Test in Hyderabad. The batter replaced Sarfaraz Khan in the side who along with Tushar Deshpande has been picked to play for India A against England Lions.

Fast bowlers Sylvester Dsouza and opener Amogh Bhatkal have received their maiden Mumbai call-up on the back of their good performances in domestic cricket.

“Bhatkal has hit five-six centuries for Nirlon in inter-office cricket, including 260 in the Times Shield against Income Tax. For the Parsee Gymkhana, he scored 149 not out against Payyade SC in the Kanga League, and 109 not out versus Parkophene in the Police Shield,” a source said.

Skipper Ajinkya Rahane missed Mumbai’s previous match against Bihar in Patna that they won with a stiff neck. Mumbai beat Bihar by 51 runs in their first game and collected a bonus point.

Speaking about Shreyas Iyer, he was picked as the vice-captain in the T20I against Australia at home and now finds himself axed from the T20I series against Afghanistan at home. The exclusion of players like him and KL Rahul has made experts in the Indian cricket fraternity very unhappy. He scored 535 runs in the World Cup and since then has blown hot and cold in international cricket.

Aakash Chopra Unhappy With Shreyas Iyer’s Axiong From Afghanistan T20Is

“Iyer was nominated as the Vice-Captain for the 5-match T20i series vs Australia. Was a part of the squad against SA too. Now, finds no place in the team vs Afghanistan. Dubey was in the squad vs Aus at home. Wasn’t picked for SA. Back in the team vs AFG. Also, where is Ishan Kishen? Any news on his availability?” tweeted Aakash Chopra after India’s T20I squad for the Afghanistan series was announced.
