Team India is set to be without their star opener Shubman Gill for the upcoming game against Afghanistan in the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup. The right-handed batsman missed Team India’s World Cup opener against Australia on Sunday (October 8) and is set to miss the Afghanistan clash too this week.

Shubman Gill is currently down with dengue but is recovering fast, according to reports. Recent reports suggested that he was likely to stay in Chennai and avoid traveling or be at his home in Chandigarh. However, ANI has reported that the right-handed batsman is set to travel to Delhi with the team.

“Shubman Gill is recovering and he will be traveling with the team to Delhi, he will be with the team and is not likely to go to his home Chandigarh for rest we hope that he will be back on the field before the match against Pakistan and playing against Afghanistan will depend on his next report,” a source told the news outlet.

Team India win without Shubman Gill:

On Sunday, India beat Australia by six wickets to start their World Cup campaign with a win. Shubman Gill’s absence was a huge blow for the hosts but they managed to end up on the winning side. But the horrific start with the bat must have made the Indian team management miss Shubman Gill.

Ishan Kishan replaced the opener in the playing eleven but failed to justify his selection. Chasing a modest total of 200 runs, India were in all sorts of trouble after losing 3 wickets for just 2 runs. Openers Kishan and Rohit Sharma fell for a duck and Shreyas Iyer also failed to open his account.

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul then steered India out of troubled water with a decisive stand of 165 runs. Josh Hazlewood broke the stand by dismissing Kohli for 85. Rahul and Hardik Pandya then shared an unbeaten stand of 34 runs to take India home in the 42nd over. India’s next game is against Afghanistan on Wednesday (October 11) in Delhi.

It will be followed by the game against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 14. While Shubman Gill is likely to miss the game against Afghanistan, he could be in contention to play against Pakistan.
