In the 9th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team and Hashmatullah Shahidi-led Afghanistan National Cricket Team locked horns with each other on Wednesday, October 11, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Afghanistan National Cricket Team won the toss and chose to bat first in the match. They fielded the same playing XI from the previous game, but the Men In Blue made one change by bringing in Shardul Thakur for Ravichandran Ashwin.

Meanwhile, the top three batters of the side – Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Rahmat Shah – got starts but they were unable to convert them into big scores and Afghanistan lost three wickets with just 63 runs on the board.

After that, skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi (80) was joined by all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai (62) and together they had a 121-run stand that brought Afghanistan back into the game. The lower order of the side also chipped in as the Afghans were able to post a below-par total of 272/8 on the board.

For India, Jasprit Bumrah shined with the ball as he bagged 4 wickets in the match. He was well supported by Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, and Shardul Thakur, who also chipped in with wickets.

Chasing the target in the match, Rohit Sharma absolutely demolished the Afghanistan bowling unit. He looked unstoppable in the middle and smashed a record-breaking century. He smashed 131 runs off 84 balls, with 16 fours and 5 sixes, before getting dismissed.

Rohit Sharma was also involved in a sensational 156 runs partnership with Ishan Kishan and 49 runs partnership with Virat Kohli. In the end, Virat Kohli (55) and Shreyas Iyer (25) remained unbeaten and India completed the run-chase in 35 overs to register a dominant 8-wicket win.

India will now have a winning momentum of two games, heading into the high-octane ICC World Cup 2023 clash against arch-rivals Pakistan National Cricket Team at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14.
