Indian cricket’s batting future Shubman Gill has been catching a lot of heat not just from his captain Rohit Sharma but also from cricket pundits all around the country for the inconsistency he has shown in the recent past. His mix-up with Rohit Sharma which led to the batter’s run out is also another reason why he is being criticized but former Indian batter Rohan Gavaskar made a bold claim that Gill doesn’t fit into India’s scheme of things in the shortest format.
Shubman Gill has featured regularly for India across all formats but his form has suddenly dipped after the WTC final last year. Before it, Gill was scoring plenty of runs in the ODI format for which he was a part of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as well.
In the recently concluded Test series in South Africa, Shubman Gill who was playing his first-ever red-ball match there, failed to put any impact whatsoever. What has been more questionable is his batting in T20s. Since making his debut last year against Sri Lanka, Gill has scored just 335 runs in 14 matches, which is something that doesn’t suit his persona.
It was because of Yashasvi Jaiswal’s last-moment injury that Gill came in to bat with Rohit Sharma in the 1st T20 against Afghanistan 2 days ago. After leading to the run out of his captain where he totally ignored Rohit’s call, Shubman Gill played a few fantastic shots and showed sparks of a big innings.
However, as he was going aggressively behind a weak Afghanistan bowling line-up, it was Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s googly that led to his removal for 23. At that point, he was totally set at the crease and it was his poor and rash shot selection against a very good delivery that Afghanistan got his wicket. Now it is obvious for him to face backlash which could have worsened had India lost the match before Shivam Dube came and saved it.
Rohan Gavaskar Claims Shubman Gill Will Have To Sit Out When Yashasvi Jaiswal Returns
But now the main question that arises is will he be a first-choice opener for India when Yashasvi Jaiswal comes back fit? Rohan Gavaskar thinks there is absolutely no chance. He stated that even if Shubman Gill has shown a lot of class in his batting, his decision-making in T20s has been questionable and with the T20 World Cup coming up in 5 months time, only a miracle performance can help Gill retain his spot.
“Look Shubman Gill is a quality batsman, we have seen that for the last 4-5 years, from his U-19 days but in the current scheme of things, in the current scenario, Yashasvi will play. When Virat comes in, he will play. You don’t have players of Virat and Rohit Sharma’s ability and experience in the squad if you’re not gonna make them play. There is also Suryakumar Yadav who will be integrate right away. So Shubman Gill will have to fight for his place and make himself undroppable,” he said on Cricbuzz.
