India National Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma’s on-field blunder and Afghanistan National Cricket Team skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi’s incredible game awareness earned the Afghans a free hit in the 9th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

The 9th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 was played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Afghanistan batted very well against the strong Indian bowling unit.

Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi led his side from the front and was the top performer in the batting department. He played some brilliant strokes and smashed a good half-century for his side.

Shahidi also showed great game awareness in the 22nd over of the innings, which was bowled by Ravindra Jadeja, and earned his team a free hit. The Afghanistan skipper noticed that India only 4 had fielders inside the ring and he went for a big slog sweep on the first ball of the over and got a boundary.

He informed umpire Michael Gough about Rohit Sharma’s blunder on the field and earned his team a free hit. However, he wasn’t able to utilize it as he only took a single off the free hit delivery.

During the toss, Hashmatullah Shahidi said that they wanted to bat first because the surface at the Arun Jaitley Stadium looked good. He also said that they are enjoying the chance to showcase their talent to the world. He said:

“We will bat first. It looks like a good batting surface. We have a good bowling attack to restrict them. It looks like a good surface, we want to bounce back with the bat.

“We are enjoying, good chance to showcase our talent. We are going with the same team.

Meanwhile, the Afghan skipper Shahidi smashed a sensational 80 runs in the match off 88 balls and was involved in a 121-run partnership in 128 balls with Azmatullah Omarzai.
