Cricket Australia (CA) has announced a 14-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against India, set to commence on November 23. Wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade has been appointed captain for this series as several senior players are taking a rest.
Experienced players such as David Warner, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, and Adam Zampa are part of the squad. Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Marsh, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood will return home after the ICC World Cup 2023.
Matthew Wade has taken up the role of captain on an interim basis, and Australia has been without a permanent T20 captain since February. Wade hasn’t played international cricket since the T20 World Cup but was brought in as cover for the series against South Africa.
Matthew Wade Has Captained The Team Previously – George Bailey
Australian cricket team chief selector George Bailey highlighted Matthew Wade’s previous experience as a captain and his leadership qualities. Bailey drew a parallel with Mitch Marsh’s captaincy during the South Africa series.
“Matthew has captained the team previously, is a leader in the group and we look forward to him taking the reins for this series. Like Mitch Marsh in the South Africa series, this is another great opportunity to further deepen our international leadership experience and depth,” said Bailey.
Players like Tim David, Sean Abbott, Josh Inglis, Jason Behrendorff, and Nathan Ellis have been selected for the series, while Matt Short, Spencer Johnson, and Tanveer Sangha retained their spots. However, Ashton Agar has been ruled out due to a calf injury.
