Former Australia cricketers Chris Rogers, Moises Henriques, and Lisa Sthalekar have taken a dig at David Warner for his latest comments on making a Test comeback for Australia.

Warner announced his retirement after the Sydney Test against Pakistan played earlier this year. The left-handed opener received a dream farewell from his teammates and the supporters.

David Warner's comments on Test comeback

However, recently, he expressed his desire to make a comeback for Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The former Australia opener stated that he can play the next Sheffield Shield match and make a Test comeback if the team wants him.

“I’m always dead serious. Let’s be honest, the guys have played one red ball game (first round of the shield) since their last Test matches in February, so I’ve almost had the same preparation," Warner said on Code Sports.

“Honestly, if they really needed myself for this series, I’m more than happy to play the next Shield game and go out there and play. I did retire for the right reasons to finish the game, and I wanted to finish. (But) my hand is up if they desperately need someone. I’m not going to shy away from that," he added.

Ex-Australia cricketers slam David Warner

Chris Rogers, Moises Henriques, and Lisa Sthalekar expressed their surprise over Warner's comments.

"I think Davey (David Warner) is being Davey and he is looking for a reaction. I had to laugh. I thought to myself maybe I should come to this press conference and say I'm ready to go but then I did see Mitch Starc bowling (in the Sheffield Shield) and I thought no chance," Warner said to the media.

Former Australia women's cricketer Lisa Sthalekar lambasted David Warner to make such comments despite receiving a dream farewell. She went on to claim that the selectors were unable to use Warner's last Test match as a preparation for the next Test opening batter because it was the farewell Test for him.

“What baffles me is that this guy had his swansong last summer to say farewell and finish on his terms. One could argue that because of that allowance, the team is in this situation as selectors didn’t use those Tests wisely to blood the next opener," Sthalekar said to The Nightly.

David Warner's New South Wales captain Moises Henriques too expressed surprise over Warner's comments. He claimed that bringing back would hold back the upcoming generation.

"I'd have to have a conversation about the reasons that he wants to do it. Why?" Henriques said of Warner. "And then again it's another conversation with our selectors in terms of, I guess, are we holding back the next generation... or is it something that we need right now," Henriques said.

Australia looking for a Test opener

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy will begin in late November between Australia and India. The five-match Test series will be played in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.

With Steve Smith moving back to No. 4, the Australian selectors are looking for a Test opener to partner Usman Khawaja at the top. Australia will be aiming to regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy which they haven't won since the last decade.
