The 25-year-old India National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who has been the standout performer for the side in Test cricket for a while, will reportedly miss the Test series against Australia National Cricket Team after his horrific road accident.

Rishabh Pant was badly injured in a road accident on Friday, December 30. The accident took place in the early hours of Friday when he was driving from Delhi to Roorkee to pay a surprise visit to his family.

The police informed that Pant dozed off while driving and his Mercedes Benz car collided with the divider railings on the Delhi-Haridwar highway and then turned a few times before catching fire. After the car accident, Pant was taken to Saksham Hospital Multispecialty and Trauma Centre and was later shifted to Max Hospital in Dehradun. Pant’s condition was told to be stable, but he suffered several injuries, including a ligament tear in his right knee.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sources have told that the star wicketkeeper-batter Pant will miss the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, reported PTI. The reports of the CT scan of his brain and spinal cord have returned “normal” but the ligament injury will certainly keep him out of action for 2-6 months.

“He has extensive swelling so MRI of ankle and knee is yet to be conducted. Once he is fit enough to travel, he will come to Mumbai where he will be under the board’s empanelled doctor Dinshaw Pardiwala,” a BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

The new selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will face the big challenge of selecting two wicketkeeper-batters in the squad for the Australia Test series at home.

Rishabh Pant has been India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in Test cricket for a long period of time and earlier in 2022 the selection committee dropped the veteran gloveman, Wriddhiman Saha, from the Test squad and included KS Bharat in his place as they wanted to groom a young wicketkeeper. Since then, Bharat has been travelling with the team as the second-choice wicketkeeper-batter.

Meanwhile, the wicketkeeper’s slot is now up for grabs and three players – KS Bharat, India A’s second keeper Upendra Yadav and white-ball specialist Ishan Kishan – are reportedly in contention to replace Pant in the Test team.

Pant’s current understudy KS Bharat should be an automatic inclusion in the playing XI, but Upendra Yadav, as a package, is a far better option. However, both the players are not of the same quality as Pant.

Ishan Kishan and even Sanju Samson have represented India at the highest level and are great options, but both of them didn’t keep the wickets in Ranji Trophy for Kerala and Jharkhand respectively.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 between India and Australia will begin on February 9 at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur. The remaining Test matches will be played in Delhi, Dharamsala and Ahmedabad.
