Australian captain Pat Cummins has opened up about the fast-bowling all-rounder Cameron Green’s injury and possible timeline for the return to action, as they are set to face the formidable India in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 later this year.
Green is set to miss the upcoming five-match Test series against India at home due to back surgery. The star all-rounder’s absence is a significant blow for the Australian cricket team, as it will leave a gap in both their bowling and batting departments.
Pat Cummins opens up on Cameron Green's setback ahead of India Tests
The 25-year-old Cameron Green has been a rising star, and his injury has caused big concern about how Australia will cope without his versatile presence on the field. However, the Australian team management and captain Cummins are confident that the talented all-rounder has a bright future ahead and will bounce back stronger once fully recovered.
Meanwhile, Pat Cummins cited his journey through the physical demands of international cricket to share his thoughts on Cameron Green’s injury that forced him to miss the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against the Indian cricket team at home.
Cummins said that Australia and even Green wanted to bowl against India in the upcoming Test series, but a back injury shattered his dreams. However, the star pacer is confident that Green has a long career ahead of him but didn’t reveal anything about the seriousness of his injury and how much time it takes to recover and return to the action.
I'm sure he'll be right in the long run: Pat Cummins on Cameron Green
Pat Cummins was quoted as saying by Reuters: “We want him bowling, Cam wants to be bowling, and he has a long career ahead of him. It's about trying to place Cam the cricketer in the best position he can be to have the career that he's hoping for. He's young, so I'm sure he'll be right in the long run.”
Cummins, who was once plagued by injuries himself, has learned the art of managing his workload to extend his career beyond initial expectations and even he is planning to lead the Kangaroos for more than two years.
Pat Cummins likely to quit Australia's captaincy after two years
The 31-year-old pacer revealed that he initially thought to quit the captaincy in 2025, but he is now entertaining the idea of pushing that limit further till at least 2027, thanks to his growth in both fitness and leadership.
He signed off by saying, “Maybe I can go a little bit longer than I first thought. I feel like I can manage a lot more than what I did back then, just by getting better at it and having some wonderful people around that help as well. I'm not going to do it forever, but I wouldn't say it's imminent that I'm going to step away. (2027) is the big question, but it's a long way away.”
Notably, Australians have not won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for over a decade, and even they lost their last two Test series to India at home, so they would be certainly aiming for revenge when Rohit Sharma and his brigade come down under for their hat-trick of series wins.
