Indian skipper Rohit Sharma led India to the Asia Cup 2023 title win on Sunday. This is his second Asia Cup win as captain and a timely one with the Men in Blue heading into an ODI World Cup at home.

Rohit scored 194 runs at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 107.78 during the Asia Cup with three scores of 50 plus. He took his time and built on a good start which was the highlight of Rohit’s runs in this tournament. He also went past 10,000 runs in the tournament.

Rohit broke several records in the Super 4 game against Sri Lanka. He became the fastest opening batter to reach 8,000 runs in ODI cricket and the second fastest to reach 10,000 runs in ODIs. He now has 28 sixes in Asia Cup tournaments surpassing Shahid Afridi’s tally.

He will now lead the side in a three-match ODI series followed by the ICC World Cup at home. Before the Australia series, Wasim Akram hailed Rohit as the right man to lead India in the ODI World Cup at home. His recent Asia Cup win as captain has added weight to his leadership for the World Cup.

“What I like about him as a skipper is that he is very calm on the field. In general, he’s a very experienced cricketer. He’s been playing cricket for so many years and he’s the right man to lead India to the World Cup with a super-talented side, with one of the most experienced, talented and, in fact, the best batch in world cricket” said Akram on Star Sports.

He further said that with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, Rohit has two good players to back him up in the World Cup. The two can guide the younger players on the side as well he said.

“With 13,000 man, Virat Kohli there is there to support his team with youngsters like Ishan Kishan. KL Rahul came back well, so everything is going in the right direction before the World Cup for the India team,” Wasim Akram concluded.

India begin their World Cup campaign against Australia in Chennai on October 8.
