After the ICC World Cup 2023, India will take on Australia in a T20I series. The IND vs AUS T20I series will witness five encounters, set to be played from November 23 to December 3.
Many key players are expected to be part of IND vs AUS T20Is. The ICC T20 World Cup takes place next year and it is not wrong to say that Team India will begin the preparation with the IND vs AUS series itself.
Players who are dropped from the series can be sure that they might not get a place in the T20 World Cup squad next year. Here we take a look at 5 Indian players who can return from T20Is if not named in India T20 squad vs Australia.
IND vs AUS T20 2023 India Squad: 5 Indian Players Who Can Retire From T20Is If Not Named In India T20 Squad vs Australia
5. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan is the first Indian player on this list. Dhawan has not retired from any format but he has vanished from the national team. The left-handed batter used to represent the team in ODIs but lost his place to Shubman Gill ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023.
With Gill’s fabulous batting show in ODIs, it is highly unlikely that Dhawan will return to ODIs. Similarly, his T20I career is also finished. Dhawan last played a T20I match in July 2021.
4. Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik is another Indian player who might retire from T20Is if not picked in the IND vs AUS T20I series. Karthik made a surprising comeback to the national team last year and played in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. However, post his batting failure in the tournament, he was dropped from the national team.
For wicketkeepers, India has options like Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, and Rishan Pant. Unlike Karthik, they are young and have a lot of years ahead in their career. Hence, it is almost impossible for Karthik to make a comeback to the T20I side and he might announce his retirement soon.
3. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was a confirmed member of T20Is and ODIs till last year. However, since the start of 2023, Kumar was sidelined to make way for young pacers. Pacers like Arshdeep Singh have impressed with his performance in T20Is.
Similarly, senior pacers like Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah are crucial members of the pace department. Kumar also failed to impress with his show in IPL 2023. Hence, he might retire from the shortest format if not picked for the IND vs AUS T20I series.
2. Ravichandran Ashwin
Ravichandran Ashwin is another player on this list. Ashwin is a prominent member of the Test team. However, he is overlooked when it comes to ODIs and T20I. Although he makes a few appearances in the limited-overs format, he is not the first-choice spinner for selectors.
Ashwin was part of the ICC T20 World Cup squad last year. However, post the tournament, he did not feature in the shortest format. In the spin department, players like Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravi Bishnoi are in the queue to get a place in the T20 World Cup. Hence, Ashwin might find it hard to get a place in the forthcoming T20I series.

1. Umesh Yadav
Umesh Yadav is another player who can retire from T20Is if not picked in IND vs AUS T20I series. The right-arm pacer only represents the team in the Test format. He last played a T20I game in October 2022 against South Africa.
With the emergence of pacers like Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, and Avesh Khan among others, Umesh Yadav would not get opportunities to make a comeback to the T20I team.
