Shreyas Iyer‘s back injury is reportedly not serious but the middle-order batsman remains doubtful for India’s upcoming game against Bangladesh in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023.
The right-handed batsman recently returned to action after being sidelined with a back injury. He suffered the injury during the Ahmedabad Test against Australia in March this year and had to undergo surgery. While his participation in the Asia Cup as well as the World Cup looked doubtful after the surgery, he did well to recover in time for the tournaments.
Shreyas Iyer made his much-awaited return to action in the ongoing competition. The comeback, however, has not panned out as he would have hoped. He has batted just once in the tournament so far and has missed both of India’s Super 4 games. In his comeback game, Shreyas Iyer scored 14 against Pakistan and did not get a chance to bat against Nepal.
He was ruled out of the match against Pakistan due to a back spasm and failed to recover for the match against Sri Lanka too. And while the Mumbai star was expected to recover for the upcoming game against Bangladesh, it looks highly doubtful.
Shreyas Iyer likely to miss Bangladesh game:
According to a report in The Times of India, Shreyas Iyer’s back injury is not very serious but concerns remain about his availability for the game against Bangladesh. The selectors are very concerned with the situation as they are set to name the squad for the three-match series against Australia sometime during the week.
The report further stated that things will be more clear on Thursday during the optional training ahead of the Bangladesh game. The sources have said that there seems to be some amount of stiffness, which will definitely impact the player’s movements during fielding. However, they are hopeful that the serious would not be serious.
The selectors have already named India’s preliminary World Cup squad and Shreyas Iyer is a part of the team. The selectors would be hoping that he recovers in time for the series against Australia and gets some much-needed match practice for the World Cup.
