The IND vs ENG Visakhapatnam Test is nicely poised with India on 336/6 in 93 overs after day 1. The batters would consider themselves unlucky not to capitalize on the starts and help India get to a score of around 450. Yashasvi Jaiswal ended unbeaten on 179. Earlier in the day, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first to make the best use of the batting conditions.

Given where they are, the tailenders along with Ashwin should look to stay on with Jaiswal and add another 100 runs at least to the team’s overnight score. Every Indian batter got starts but none could capitalize on it. Jaiswal notched up his career-best score and added key partnerships with all the batters.

The best was with Shreyas Iyer as the southpaw and the right-hander added 90 for the third wicket. The England spinners managed to get three wickets in the final session grabbing the initiative late in the day’s play.

Rehan Ahmed and debutant Shoaib Bashir took two each. James Anderson dismissed Sjhubman Gill while Tom Hartley accounted for Rohit Sharma’s wicket. In the absence of Virat Kohli, Rohit with his experience should look to have batted longer after he got a start. he fell in the trap as he did not see the leg slip fielder placed by England skipper Ben Stokes.

India and England both made a few changes heading into the second Test in Visakhapatnam. India with KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja injured brought in Kuldeep Yadav and Rajat Patidar. Mohammed Siraj was rested and Mukesh Kumar was given a chance in his place. Meanwhile, for England, Bashir replaced the injured Jack Leach and the veteran James Anderson replaced Mark Wood.

The pitch did not have any demons as admitted by former England spinner Kevin Pieterenhimself on commentry for Sports 18. The pitch did assist the spinners but was not a rank turner like the Hyderabad wicket was. Conditions for batting were also a lot better as Jaiswal proved with his unbeaten knock. He now has scored his career-best and batted through the day in his short Test career.

India are looking to get somewhere close to 500 and for that to happen, Jaiswal and Ashwin will need to bat well and the tailenders will also need to chip in.

Jaiswal spoke about his knock after the first day’s play and spoke about how the wicket behaved throughout the day’s play. The batter said how the pitch was damp to start off and settled as the day went by. There was enough turn for the spinners to keep them interested.

“The pitch played a bit differently, in the morning it was a bit damp and then it settled. With the older ball, there was some bounce. Rahul sir and Rohit bhai kept giving me the confidence and told me to convert this into a big innings, and stay till the end” said Jaiswal.

Speaking about the wicket, it will turn even more as the game progresses. Hence the batters need to score as many as possible inside the first two hours of play on day two. Going too much on the defensive might end up for them to lose their wickets as the wicket of Rohit Sharma proved. The batters should look to score with intent.

Speaking about the weather in Vizag on Saturday, the temperatures will be around 30-31 degrees during the day. The humidity will be around 76 percent and there will be spells of clouds as the day progresses. There is a 15-20 percent chance of rain as well.
