Cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar shared reviews on Shubman Gill’s dismissal in the 1st innings of the ongoing India vs England 1st Test. Sanjay Manjrekar said that Shubman Gill was trying to hit over the infield. The reputed commentator also feels that Shubman Gill should work on his backfoot.

Shubman Gill gave a dismal show in the IND vs ENG 1st Test in Hyderabad. Batting at one-down, Gill piled up 23 runs off 66 deliveries including 2 boundaries. England spinner Tom Hartley dismissed him with a catch at mid-wicket when Gill tried to attack him.

Notably, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal held the strike at the start of Day 2. However, both of them got out within the first hour of the play. Gill has struggled to come up with a big knock in the longest format in recent times.

Shubman Gill Was Trying To Break The Shackles Somewhat: Sanjay Manjrekar

Sanjay Manjrekar spoke about Shubman Gill’s dismissal to ESPN Cricinfo. The India batter feels that the Gujarat Titans batter was trying to break the shackles to hit over the field.

“Shubman Gill’s decision to bat slower than the need of the hour went against him. You’ve to look at the way he got out. You got the impression when he played the shot that he was trying to break the shackles somewhat, trying to hit over the infield. It was a bit of a grind for Gill,” the 58-year-old said.

Sanjay Manjrekar Urges Shubman Gill To Improve Backfoot Play

Manjrekar, who played 37 Tests for India, also feels that Gill needs to improve his backfoot play. He also added that Gill did not play any shots on the backfoot.

“We’ve been talking a lot about backfoot play on turning pitches against spinners and when you look at the backfoot play of Gill, you’ll see that there’s hardly any. He’s only trying to defend with a pretty rigid bat instead of trying to maneuver it”, he said.

Manjrekar, who represented Team India from 1987 to 1996, feels that India coach Rahul Dravid is the perfect person to encourage Gill to play on the back foot.

“This is something that I’m sure Gill will start working on. No better person than Rahul Dravid to be there with him to just encourage him to play more of the backfoot,” the Indian cricket commentator concluded.
