Legendary former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar came out in support of skipper Rohit Sharma for his comments on overseas teams complaining about the spin-friendly Indian tracks whenever they come to play in the sub-continent nation.

Rohit Sharma made these comments during the press conference after India defeated South Africa in the 2nd Test at Newlands to draw the series by 1-1. The Newlands Test was tailor-made for bowling and a record of 23 wickets fell on Day 1 and 3 innings were played out within the 3 sessions.

The match did not even last 2 entire days as India clinched a famous first-ever Test match win in Newlands by the 2nd session of Day 2. In terms of most wickets that fell in a single day, 23 counted as the 2nd highest number with 25 wickets on a single day during a 1904 Test between Australia and England, holds the pole position.

Moreover, it was also the shortest test match ever and was one of India’s best Test match performances ever. South Africa after bundling out for 55 in the 1st innings, was able to set up an easy target of 79 for India. The visitors would chase it down in no time but shouts from Indian media and Pundits rose very high against the nature of the Newlands pitch.

Captain Rohit Sharma stated that he and his team don’t have any problem and are comfortable playing in these types of pitches (Newlands) as they believe it is a good way of challenging themselves in foreign conditions. However, in his following statement, Rohit Sharma lashed out and condemned foreign teams for nagging about Indian pitches that started to spin from Day 1 itself.

He wanted to say that former SENA cricketers and the media should not criticize India when they take advantage of home conditions. His comment created a bit of whirlwind on social media but Sunil Gavaskar supported him and claimed that Rohit was spot on with his thoughts.

“The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was spot on when he said after the quick finish in the 2nd Test that he doesn’t mind playing on pitches like the one dished out there as it’s a challenge to play on surfaces different from home.” – Gavaskar wrote in his column on Mid-day.

“Old Powers Try To Denigrate India”, Sunil Gavaskar On Rohit Sharma’s Comments

The 74-year-old 1983 World Cup winner taunted the SENA media and experts by claiming that they will never stop nagging or complaining when the ball starts to turn in Indian pitches, stating that the Old powers – Australia and England are always on the lookout to “denigrate” India and its ways.

“He (Rohit Sharma) also said that please don’t start questioning the pitch when the ball starts turning on Day 1 in India. Of course, he is asking for the impossible because as we have seen ever since India became a power in the sport and began to assert itself in ICC boardrooms, there has been a concerted effort to denigrate it by those from the Old Powers. They arrive with an agenda and come what may, will dish out stories for getting the brownie points at home.” – Gavaskar concluded.
