India skipper Rohit Sharma has said that while he does not know much about Jasprit Bumrah’s comeback, the Indian team-management will make sure to give the pacer as much game time as possible before the all-important ICC World Cup 2023.

One of India’s key players, Jasprit Bumrah has not played a competitive game since the home T20I series against Australia in September last year. The right-arm pacer was sidelined due to a stress reaction in his lower back. He was later named in the ODI squad for the home series against Sri Lanka in January this year but pulled out of the series at the last moment after experiencing pain in his back again.

In March this year, he underwent surgery on his back in New Zealand and has been at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) since then for his rehabilitation. The fast bowler recently resumed bowling in nets and is looking set to make his much-awaited return to international cricket. Last week, the BCCI delivered an update on the bowler, stating:

“Mr Jasprit Bumrah and Mr Prasidh Krishna: The two fast bowlers are in the final stages of their rehab and are bowling with full intensity in the nets. The duo will now play some practice games, which the NCA will organize. The BCCI Medical Team is pleased with their progress and will make a final decision after assessing them following the practice games.”

Rohit Sharma on Jasprit Bumrah’s comeback:

Speaking ahead of the first ODI against West Indies, captain Rohit Sharma spoke about Jasprit Bumrah as he highlighted his importance for the team. The India star also said that the team management is in constant touch with the NCA.

Recent reports suggested that Jasprit Bumrah could be a part of India’s squad for the three-match T20I series against Ireland next month. Speaking about that, Rohit said that he still does not know the plans for the pacer before stating that the team management will make sure to give him ample games to prepare for the World Cup,

“He (Bumrah) has loads of experience and that experience will be crucial for us,” said Rohit. “He is coming back from a long injury and I don’t know whether he will play in the Ireland T20Is. But we will try to give him as much game time as possible before the World Cup,” Rohit said in a pre-match press conference.

“When you’re returning from such a big injury, you don’t have that match practice and match fitness. So the more he plays, the better it is for himself as well as the team. We are in constant touch with the NCA and he looks good at the moment,” the India skipper added.

Meanwhile, the three-match ODI series between India and West Indies will be played on Thursday (July 27) at the Kensington Oval.
