Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli is on the brink of achieving another significant milestone during the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Virat Kohli is set to surpass former Australia captain Ricky Ponting in the list of players with the most runs scored in ODI World Cups.
Virat Kohli is currently preparing for the upcoming semifinal encounter against the Kane Williamson-led team in the ongoing World Cup. The Rohit Sharma-led team will take on the New Zealand team at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday, November 15.
The 35-year-old stands as the highest run-scorer in the World Cup, amassing 594 runs in nine matches with an impressive average of 99 and a strike rate of 88.52. The right-handed batter has showcased his consistency, registering two centuries and five half-centuries.
Virat Kohli Needs To Score 120 Runs In Semi-Final Clash
Virat Kohli, who is making his fourth World Cup appearance, has scored 1624 runs in 35 matches at an impressive average of 58.00. He has smashed four centuries and 11 fifties. He batter needs to score 120 runs in the semifinal clash to surpass Ricky Ponting’s tally.
Ricky Ponting, who is second in all-time ODI World Cup run-scorers, scored 1743 runs in 46 matches with an average of 45.86. Legendary Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar holds the top spot in the batting charts with 2278 runs in 45 World Cup matches with an average of 56.95.
Virat Kohli’s Record Against New Zealand ODI World Cups
Virat Kohli has scored 96 runs at an average of 48 in two ODI World Cup matches against New Zealand. He scored only one run against the Black Caps during the 2019 World Cup semi-final in Manchester, where he was trapped leg before by left-arm seamer Trent Boult.
In the league stage of the ongoing World Cup, Kohli played a crucial role in the Men in Blue’s run chase against New Zealand in Dharamsala. He scored 95 off 104 balls, hitting eight fours and two sixes, helping the team chase the 274-run target with four wickets in hand.
