The 24-year-old India National Cricket Team opening batsman Shubman Gill has said that the Men In Blue will face the same kind of pressure as the Asia Cup 2023 clash against Pakistan in all the matches of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 is the 13th edition of the 50-over Cricket World Cup. The competition is scheduled to be held from October 5 to November 19 in India. This is the first time India will be hosting an ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup alone. They previously co-hosted the World Cups with other countries in 1987, 1996, and 2011.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four clash against Pakistan, Shubman Gill said that his side posting a competitive total on the board despite the failure of the top order in the group stage game against Pakistan was a good sign. He elaborated:
“Even when our top-order didn’t work, we scored pretty well as per that wicket. At one stage, we were closing in on 300. So I think it was a good sign because we got to a competitive total despite our top order not clicking.”
He added that the pressure of the India vs Pakistan match will be replicated in all the matches of his team during the World Cup on home soil.
“I believe that we’ll face the same kind of pressure [as against Pakistan] in all the nine games of the World Cup,” Shubman Gill added.
All games in the World Cup are must-win games for us – Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill added that all the matches in the World Cup will be must-win encounters for them and they have to respect all the opposition.
“It won’t make a difference if we play against Afghanistan, Netherlands or Pakistan. All games in the World Cup are must win games for us. And we’ll face the same kind of pressure and nerves that we faced in that game [Asia Cup encounter against Pakistan] in all the nine games of the World Cup,” Gill said.
Talking about Team India, Shubman Gill said that all the players are well aware of their roles and there is a lot of clarity in the side.
“There’s a lot of clarity within the side. All players have an understanding of what is expected of them in a particular situation,” Shubman Gill said.
“After the Asia Cup and World Cup team selections, everyone’s quite clear on their positions and what roles they’d play in that position.”
India will open their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign against Pat Cummins-led Australia National Cricket Team on Sunday, October 8, at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
