IND vs PAK: Shreyas Iyer Has Had A Long Layoff - Sanjay Manjrekar

Former India player Sanjay Manjrekar has said that he is intrigued by Shreyas Iyer’s fitness issues. He also said that the right-handed batsman has already had a long layoff.

Shreyas Iyer was dropped in IND vs PAK super four encounter of Asia Cup 2023. Rohit Sharma revealed during the toss that Shreyas Iyer has got a back spasm.

The right-handed batsman recently made a comeback to the Indian team in Asia Cup 2023. In March 2023, he faced a back injury due to which he was ruled out of IND vs AUS Test series. He later underwent a back injury in London in April 2023. However, Shreyas Iyer’s injury has surfaced multiple times.

I Am Just Intrigued By Shreyas Iyer’s Fitness: Sanjay Manjrekar

While speaking to Star Sports, cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar said that he was intrigued by Iyer’s fitness issues. He also added that he has had a long layoff.

“I am just intrigued by Shreyas Iyer’s fitness if that’s the case. He has had a long layoff. The big story was Shreyas Iyer was fit when he played the first two games. He looked good in that game against Pakistan, scored 20-odd runs. And now he has got a back spasm,” Manjrekar said.

“You know you have got to start looking at players, if they are going to be such an issue for the captain, the team management we have been so patient, waiting for him to comeback in the first match. He was there for the second game. But he has missed out due to back spasm. That’s unfortunate, it’s a forced change,” he added.

Glad To See Ishan Kishan Playing In IND vs PAK Clash: Sanjay Manjrekar

Manjrekar also said that he was happy to see Ishan Kishan in the IND vs PAK Super Four encounter.

“I am just glad that Ishan Kishan is playing and KL Rahul… we have to see if he is match fit. But I was praying that Ishan Kishan not be left out to make way for KL Rahul. Shreyas Iyer’s back spasms has made life very convenient now,” the 58-year-old concluded.

Since Shreyas Iyer was rested in the IND vs PAK match, KL Rahul was picked on his behalf. However, Ishan Kishan took the gloves for India and both the wicketkeeper options managed to get a place in the playing XI.

Talking about the IND vs PAK match, the match has been halted due to rain. After India reached 24.1 on the scoreboard, the match was affected by rain. India reached 147-2 on the board, with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul on strike. Earlier, Rohit Sharma (56) and Shubman Gill (58) gave an opening stand of 121 runs to the team smacking fifties.
